The safe disposal of radioactive wastes by burial in deep geological formations requires long-term predictions of the future behaviour of the wastes and their engineered repository. Such predictions can be tested by evaluating processes analogous to those which will occur in a repository, which have been long active in the natural geochemical. Burial in the ground, even in the deepest-mined repository, does not ensure adequate environmental protection for municipal solid waste, chemically hazardous waste, or radioactive waste. Satisfactory engineering of both a repository and a waste form is difficult and expensive, and reutilization options are becoming increasingly attractive. A salt repository is one of the four geologic media currently under study by the U.S. DOE Office of Nuclear Energy to support the development of a long-term strategy for geologic disposal of commercial used nuclear fuel (UNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW).
